WELCOME TO "IOV YOUTH!"

OlvinThe IOV Youth Program and Commission were officially formed at the 2007 General Assembly.  Recognizing that the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow, UNESCO has encouraged Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to form youth programs in order to prepare young people for the work that lies ahead.

IOV was one of the first to successfully establish a youth commission.  In 2009, the First IOV World Youth Congress was held in the United States, with more than 120 young IOV members from 40 countries participating in 4 days of lectures, demonstrations and activities focusing on topics related to the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The people of Bountiful, Utah graciously accepted the opportunity to help and provided accommodations and meals during the conference at no cost to the delegates.  The City of Bountiful donated the use of its buildings with the assistance and support of Bountiful Mayor, Joe Johnson.

The congress theme, “Living Traditions – Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage” was taken from the 2003 UNESCO Convention on Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage.  More than 50 lectures and demonstrations were presented during the 4 day conference.  The participants choose several projects to begin work on during the coming 2 years before Second IOV World Youth Congress, which is scheduled to take place in Nanjing, China in 2010.

The youth congress resulted in many new members joining IOV.  IOV youth are now active in many countries.  In this section, IOV youth are highlighted with reports of their projects from their home countries.  In Nepal, for example, IOV youth are not only working with their peers to increase awareness of the importance of folk art, they are providing relief to disaster areas where floods have destroyed homes and schools.

The Chair of the IOV Youth Commission is Olvin Valentin of Puerto Rico.  Olvin, like most IOV Youth, Must juggle careers, school, family life and IOV activities as they work to improve the world.   Olvin’s activities include attending law school and working with an international folk dance and music festival.  He is the Editor of a Spanish Language magazine on Culture, in which IOV is featured prominently.

As the youth program grows, exciting things will be reported in this section.  We encourage IOV youth, wherever in the world they are, to come forward and take part in our work.  To be eligible for membership in the IOV Youth Commission, you must be under the age of 35 and possess an interest in folk art.

Young Thais urged to help preserve folk stage performances

Bangkok: Permanent Secretary for Culture, Veera Rojpojanarat, Wednesday urged young Thais to help preserve Thai folk stage performances, as many were on the verge of dying out.

Presiding over the opening of an Asean forum for intangible cultural heritage conservation, held until December 28 in Bangkok, Veera told 33 youth representatives the forum was for them to exchange information, create networks and raise awareness.

Folklore and folk dances were among endangered heritage performances to be registered in the UNESCO conservation framework, he said.

Most threatened were Li Ke (Thai folk opera), Lamtud (Thai traditional performance in which two groups take turns to debate and sing), and Mor Lam (Northeastern Thai shows). He said the National Culture Commission had published a glossary of performers and contact details.
